Miley Cyrus returns with disco infused new single ‘Midnight Sky’
When Miley Cyrus dropped her EP She Is Coming in May last year, it was expected to be the first of three EPs released that year, forming her new album She Is Miley Cyrus. After the release of the EP, she only launched the single ‘Slide Away’ and the Charlie’s Angels collaboration ‘Don’t Call Me Angel’ with Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey. It seems Cyrus is finally ready to pick up where she left off as she wrote ‘she is coming, but for real this time’ when announcing new single ‘Midnight Sky’. This banger sure was worth the wait.
Miley Cyrus is already known as a chameleon when it comes to her musical style. She has done pop, pop-rock, hip hop, country and more and she is now adding eighties inspired disco retro pop to that list. ‘Midnight Sky’ was co-written by Cyrus herself and produced by Andrew Watt and Louis Bell. She described the lyrics as her taking her narrative back, as she states she was born to run, doesn’t belong to anyone and doesn’t need to be loved by the person the song is aimed at. This declaration of freedom and independence is packed in an eighties synth pop production with disco influences and a killer pre-chorus to chorus progression. The chorus is an absolute banger and the ‘ooh’-parts even sample the iconic ‘Edge of Seventeen’ by Stevie Nicks, for which Miley asked her blessing as well. Cyrus keeps proving she is one of the most exciting and unpredictable pop stars out there at the moment.
